This is a painting of me and Wallace—the corgi who stole my heart and my dinner.

He’s not even my dog. He belongs to my best friend’s girlfriend. But I fell so in love with him I started calling him Potato. Sometimes Torpedo. Because he’s shaped like both, and he moves like a little missile of joy. Golden retrievers are a close second, but this guy? This guy’s perfect. A full-on, four-legged comedian.

So I painted us. Perched on a hill. Watching the sunset. Him looking like royalty, round and fed. Me? Ribs out. Starving. But happy. Because if it came down to it—and it often did—I’d feed him before I’d feed myself. No question. That’s the kind of love animals deserve.

This piece is funny on the surface, but it’s also about selflessness. About finding peace in the absurd. About how a chubby corgi named Wallace gave me a weird sense of warmth during a time I probably needed it more than I realized.

A painting of a perfect little potato. And a hungry artist who wouldn’t have it any other way.
